Analogies between light optics and charged - particle optics Sameen

چکیده
The close analogy between geometrical optics and the classical theories of charged-particle beam optics have been known for a very long time. In recent years, quantum theories of charged-particle beam optics have been presented with the very expected feature of wavelengthdependent effects. With the current development of non-traditional prescriptions of Helmholtz and Maxwell optics respectively, accompanied with the wavelength-dependent effects, it is seen that the analogy between the two systems persists. A brief account of the various prescriptions and the parallel of the analogies is presented.

متن کاملQuantum theory of magnetic quadrupole lenses for spin - 12 particles ∗
General guidelines for constructing a quantum theory of charged-particle beam optics starting ab initio from the basic equations of quantum mechanics, appropriate to the situation under study. In the context of spin-12 particles, these guidelines are used starting with the Dirac equation. The spinor theory just constructed is used to obtain the transfer maps for normal and skew magnetic quadrup...
متن کاملWavelength-Dependent Effects in Maxwell Optics
We present a new formalism for light beam optics starting with an exact eight-dimensional matrix representation of the Maxwell equations. The Foldy-Wouthuysen iterative diagonalization technique is employed to obtain a Hamiltonian description for a system with varying refractive index. Besides, reproducing all the traditional quasiparaxial terms, this method leads to additional contributions, w...
متن کاملQuantum theory of charged-particle beam optics
Charged-particle beam optics, or the theory of transport of charged-particle beams through electromagnetic systems, is traditionally dealt with using classical mechanics. Though the classical treatment has been very successful, in designing and working of numerous charged-particle optical devices, it is natural to look for a deeper understanding based on the quantum theory, since any system is ...
متن کاملBeam Envelope Matching for Beam Guidance Systems
Ray optics and phase ellipse Optics are developed as tools for designing charged particle beam guidance systems. Specific examples of basic optical systems and of phase ellipse matching are presented as illustrations of these mathematical techniques. Presented at the Conference on Charged Particle Optics Giessen, West Germany September 8-12, 1980 also submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Method...
